There is something breathtaking about the light here on the island of Ireland.
It's difficult to explain until you've stood somewhere for a while and watched it change.
Sitting at the edge of the Atlantic, the weather is always moving. Cloud, rain, mist, a patch of blue sky, sometimes all within a few minutes. And as the weather changes, the light changes with it. And somehow, the landscape will change with it.
The sun sits relatively low here, particularly through the colder months. Its light travels across mountains, fields, cliffs and old stone walls. It disappears into mist and reflects from lakes and the sea.
Sometimes you get the beautiful golden sunrise everyone hopes for.
Sometimes you don't see the sun at all.
And sometimes, beneath a grey sky, a small opening appears in the clouds and for a few moments light floods across everything.
those are the moments I'm looking for.
Not necessarily the perfect sunrise. Just those few minutes when the light does something to a place and makes you stop.
That's what First Light is about.
I'm following that morning light through the 32 traditional counties of this island and see what I find.
One island. Thirty-two counties. Thirty-two encounters with first light.
The 32 traditional counties are grouped across island of Ireland's four historic provinces: Leinster, Munster, Connacht and Ulster.
For First Light, these are the boundaries of the journey.
Leinster: 12 counties
Carlow · Dublin · Kildare · Kilkenny · Laois · Longford · Louth · Meath · Offaly · Westmeath · Wexford · Wicklow
Munster: 6 counties
Clare · Cork · Kerry · Limerick · Tipperary · Waterford
Connacht: 5 counties
Galway · Leitrim · Mayo · Roscommon · Sligo
Ulster: 9 counties
Antrim · Armagh · Cavan · Donegal · Down · Fermanagh · Derry/Londonderry · Monaghan · Tyrone
Of Ulster's nine traditional counties, six are in Northern Ireland: Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry/Londonderry and Tyrone. Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan are in the Republic of Ireland.
The island's modern administrative map looks rather different.
The Republic of Ireland's 26 traditional counties are now represented by 31 local authorities, while Northern Ireland has 11 local government districts. The six traditional counties of Northern Ireland are no longer units of local government.
First Light isn't intended to document administrative island of Ireland, though.
It is a journey through the 32 traditional counties of the island, names and places that continue to carry geographical, cultural, sporting and historical meaning.
So I am keeping it simple:
32 counties. 32 sunrises. One island.

Every photograph in First Light will be a truthful record of that morning.
Nothing will be added, removed or composited. If the sunrise isn't there, I won't create it. I won't replace a sky, remove an object, combine multiple exposures or fabricate a sunrise.
I will never improve a sunrise. I can only witness it.
Not every dawn reveals the sun. Every dawn reveals the journey.
First Light begins long before sunrise. It begins with the decision to leave home while the rest of the island is still asleep.
At 4:30 in the morning, alone in the Wicklow Mountains, with no spectacular sunrise waiting for me, the questions are almost inevitable:
Is it worth it? Who cares?
The mountain doesn't answer. It simply becomes morning.
That's the moment when the romantic idea collides with reality.
And perhaps that's the point.
First Light isn't really about photographing 32 beautiful dawns. It's about 32 acts of showing up.
Some mornings will be breathtaking. Some will bring rain or fog. Some may feel like complete failures.
If every sunrise were perfect, the journey would be less truthful.
